The human papilloma virus can cause cellular mutation and in the worst case even cervical cancer. Normally for a vaccination the virus is administered to the body in attenuated form, which causes the immune system to build antibodies against the virus. In case of the human papilloma virus, it turned out to be impossible to artificially breed the virus to create a vaccination. Ian Frazer and the deceased Jian Zhou, however, were able to clone the virus’ surface proteins onto a different carrier virus. The disguised virus outwits the human immune system, which then in return builds antibodies against the human papilloma virus.
