Exploratory Spirit - Finalist: Ludwik Leibler

Research / Vitrimers - a new class of polymers

Content

The extremely robust plastic Duroplast is mixed with carbonic acid which creates a new class of plastics, the vitrimers. At high temperatures the atoms change their compounds, without changing the number of compounds. Vitrimers are solid, but at high temperatures they are elastic and formable. They neither melt like plastic, nor break like glass. Therefore they are fairly easy to recycle and can be used over and over.
