Inside Innovation - Nominee: Masahiro Hara (HD)

Category: Non European Countries - Method and apparatus for reading an optically two-dimensional code (the QR code)

Content

QR codes, the ubiquitous black-and-white squares found everywhere from billboard ads to product packaging, have completely changed our concept of what bar codes can do. Invented by a team led by Masahiro Hara at Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave (then a division of Denso Corp.), the QR code was released in 1994 for use in the auto industry. Uniquely suited to the digital age, the QR code pervades virtually every facet of contemporary consumer life, and it increasingly connects the physical world to the virtual worlds in our pockets.
