Category: Industry - a novel drug for the treatment of tuberculosis

Content

Each year, tuberculosis (TB) infects more than 8 million people worldwide, killing as many as 2 million annually. While the disease was practically eradicated in the developed world in the 20th century, citizens in developing countries live under constant threat of TB infection. And while a cocktail of drugs exists to battle infectious TB, treatment is difficult to administer and needs to last many months to be effective. Led by vetenary scientist Koen Andries, a team of researchers at Janssen Pharmaceutica in Belgium has developed a compound that attacks the TB bacteria in new ways and drastically simplifies and shortens treatment.
